a quandary

So I'm driving to lunch today, see? And I get to a red traffic light. To the left of me, in the other lane, is a 16-wheeler stopped well over one full car length in back of the heavy white line, posing me with the following dilemma:

Do I pull up flush to the line in my lane, past his front bumper, thus sending him the driver-to-driver message equivalent to "My dick is bigger than yours," or do I stop roughly equal to him and be so far back that the sensors under the road don't detect our presence and never change the lights for us, thus inconveniencing anyone who might arrive behind me before the signal changes?

Who should I piss off? Inquiring minds want to know.
